There were t...I just got done reading your article. There were times when I just felt like crying. I am currently a senior majoring in Computer Science, attending my final semester and just feel like giving up. I have had many head on collisions with sexism this semester, and it's only been 4 weeks. I've had many issues happen in the previous semesters, but I am now just so raw. Today I walked out of class crying because the teacher humiliated me in front of the entire class. Saying that I was lazy and that I have a poor work ethic after I put so much of my time into the assignment. Just because I finished the assignment before anyone else it automatically meant that I was not “thinking outside of the box.”
My work ethic is something I take pride in. So for him to belittle me in front of a class where the guys already make discriminating comments about women, it was disheartening. I only have 11 weeks left, but it feels like the end is never going to come. Also, my team for a web project was whispering about me when I was just sitting a couple seats away. I have never had to face anything like this before; being treated like I'm stupid just because I am a female. The guys admit it too. I wish there is something I can do. But anyways, I just wanted to let you know, that you are dead on with this topic, and it still applies to today. I'm living it.bella0109https://www.blogger.com/profile/04869869452045977765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075197587804505551.post-43349820205762505742011-09-08T13:30:54.668-07:002011-09-08T13:30:54.668-07:00Jill! <3 *grins* I don't usually have any t...Jill! <3 *grins* I don't usually have any traffic with self-help books, mostly because ones directed at women make a lot of assumptions about inherent submission that I take great offense to. Some of the list do the same.

With respect to this particular list, though, point is that the self-help books aren't actually talking about gender or career. The advice is talking about a passive attitude toward self-responsibility. The books are trying to jog the _insert proper noun here_ into taking responsibility for themselves and their own success and achievements.

The self-help books assume a negative passivity in women. The person I stole the original post from wanted to make the point that it's not /women/ and a monolithic /all woman's personality/ that the books are really address (even though they say they are (i.e. they're sexist)), but something else (learned passivity) that can be applied to other groups of people. She picked writers because she is one. Her fellow writers show a total passivity toward new publishing, falling back on mentality that is hurting their careers.

In the same way the learned passivity isn't a problem for all women, it's not a problem for all writers, either.Alii Silverwinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16903808291841951523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075197587804505551.post-65396589080038308782011-09-08T12:15:58.749-07:002011-09-08T12:15:58.749-07:00What does it really mean when you can replace '...What does it really mean when you can replace 'women' with 'writer'? One you're born with as a gender identity, and the other you either have the talent or work very hard at. And are you sure all writers feel this way, or is it only female ones?

Also why do you need self-help? There's only one I disagree with personally, and it comes from my diplomatic/communicative side:
"Never apologize if you do not regret your actions, even if that is the appropriate social response."

An apology does NOT have to equal "I'm wrong." The most important part of an apology is the acknowledgment that, whether I did anything wrong or whether I regret my actions or not, the other person has bad feelings about what happened. Apologizing in that situation is "I'm sorry that something I did caused you to feel bad," not necessarily "I'm sorry for what I did." There's an important distinction in that, one I think that a lot of people miss.Sadihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16088808991468389038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075197587804505551.post-45385160096881126022010-07-31T22:16:51.886-07:002010-07-31T22:16:51.886-07:00Solid set of rules, I like em a lot and will proba...Solid set of rules, I like em a lot and will probably steal them! It sounded cool?

The second half I find incredibly interesting. I don't play WoW (you know me and my reasons) but I was reading a link off of Penny Arcade about female players' experiences in an MMORPG and it was incredibly eye opening (and eye rolling at the same time; the eye rolls were for male gamer mentality towards female gamers). I find it interesting that females don't genderbend as much as males, but I do understand the reasons behind it. Some of it may also have to do with serious gamers being forced to be male protagonists in 90% of non-gender option games. Anything by Rockstar always has a male protagonist. Same with Ubisoft and most times with Capcom (except Bayonetta, of course). There are of course other examples but my brain is mush and this is a comment, so I'll stop there. Anyway, when it comes to something that actually presents a choice like an RPG or MMORPG women would choose a female character because it's just so damn rare elsewhere.

Or something.Jillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15248734507348261181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075197587804505551.post-76983186630053075612010-03-30T23:14:31.303-07:002010-03-30T23:14:31.303-07:00I remember reading a book as a child about a group...I remember reading a book as a child about a group of scientists who set up the greatest data mining program ever. They then fed the information into a supercomputer hoping to make the computer self aware. It was pretty funny.

I think google has some really interesting data mining algorithms. I agree with you completely on this one. There is a big difference between a personal belief, even one that implies an exclusive deed to "rightness," and being intolerant or displaying bigotry. Until and unless the person holding such belief tries to force others to believe it, too, it is a personally held spiritual belief, and those are sacred. Of course, the person claiming intolerance and bigotry has a right to believe that, as well.

All the hoo-ha about beliefs seems to be rooted in two things - the way we react to knowing someone believes differently from us (implying that we're - gasp! - wrong), and the behavior of the believers.

I hope the person in the article can get over the pain of being burned and move on to feeling in control of his or her own right to believe anything he or she wants. It's our absolute, irrevocable, undeniable right and responsibility to decide for ourselves what's right or wrong. We can say what we believe outloud. We can think other beliefs are wrong. It is also our right and responsibility to decide how we will react to being thought wrong, how we will allow other, contrary beliefs to affect us. I typically try to let them have as little effect on me as possible. I do draw the line at any attempt to force me to change my beliefs to be more like someone else's. Note the use of the word force. I don't count gentle, respectful witnessing or honest debate as trying to force me to do anything. I'm free to listen or not, to act or not. Unless sharing of beliefs crosses the line into force, harrassment or disrespect, the only potential harm is from my own choice of reaction.

Now if I could just force everyone to believe that way. ::grin::Autumn Heartsonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13533064862881845253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075197587804505551.post-70720237942530993772009-07-14T07:15:58.366-07:002009-07-14T07:15:58.366-07:00I sympathize with the hermit desire. I have days ...I sympathize with the hermit desire. I have days and weeks like that sometimes. Know that any invitation you get from me and/or Dan is always simply because we love your company, but you should never, ever feel guilty for saying no - we sympathize with the busy life, and also with the feeling of being over-socialized! heh
As to these high school people - no. I don't think you're out of line. You have plenty of friends, you lead a busy life, there's nothing wrong with turning down social overtures you don't have the time or emotional energy to spare for. However, maintaining actual friendships takes actual work, so what you may really need to do is ask yourself, "do I just want to be facebook friends with this person, or do I want to be actual friends?" Facebook friendship is all about keeping in touch with big life events, the occasional comment or message, etc. It takes minimal effort. But being actual friends with someone requires saying "yes" to some of those movies, hiking trips, etc.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to catch up with someone without wanting to become bosom buddies with them.Sadihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16088808991468389038noreply@blogger.com
